Dispersion resistance is an important technical index to measure the quality of dispersant resistance. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose is a water-soluble polymer compound, also known as water-soluble resin or water-soluble polymer, is a hydrophilic polymer material that increases the consistency of its mixture by increasing the viscosity of mixing with water, and can be dissolved in water to form a solution or dispersion. As the amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose increases, the dispersion resistance of fresh cement mortar will become better and better.
(1). The addition of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has a significant retarding effect on the mortar mixture. As the amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose increases, the setting time of the mortar will be gradually extended. In the case of the same amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, the setting time of underwater-formed mortar is longer than that of air-formed mortar. This characteristic is beneficial to underwater concrete pumping.
(2). The fresh concrete mortar with the addition of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has very good bonding properties and almost no water secretion.
(3). The amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and the water requirement of mortar showed a trend of first decreasing and then significantly increasing.
(4). Adding water reducing agent helps to improve the problem of increasing the water demand of mortar, but remember to reasonably control the amount of its addition; otherwise, sometimes the water resistance dispersibility of fresh cement mortar will be reduced.

The structural differences between cement mortar specimens with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and blank specimens were not significant; moreover, the cement mortar specimens cast in water and air did not differ much in structure and density. The main reason is that although the addition of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose greatly reduces the loss and dispersion of cement cast in water, it also makes the density of cement lower. In construction, the amount of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose should be reduced as much as possible under the condition of ensuring the effect of underwater non-dispersion.
